A Colonial lignum vitae, or iron wood, Book Slide.

The design of the Book Slide is simple but effective. It's made of 3 parts each cut out of a board of wood. The horizontal base has a cut-out section to each end which the upright book ends fit into. These allow the uprights to both slide along the base board to adjust the size to the number of books and to twist to a right angle to remove them from the base. The uprights have a simple sledge foot fixed with 3 screws. Once removed, the Book Slide can be flat packed. The distinctive grain and colouring of the wood provides decoration to the clear-cut shape. Late 19th Century.
