Concertina Despatch Box

Concertina Despatch Box

£460

A rosewood with Boulle work Despatch Case.

The top is made of rosewood inlaid with a gilt brass, floral border to the chamfered edge. The lid to the centre of the top has a gilt brass campaign handle and a daisy escutcheon. The top is joined to the base board by pleated leather sides to allow the depth of the box to expand as needed.

The interior of the lid is fitted with a burgundy leather wallet with the base board also in leather. The leather is decoratively blind tooled with a floral border pattern.

We previously believed this design originated in the late 19th century as all the examples we had seen where made of leather and dated to that period. From the style and materials used, this design is obviously much earlier in date and a precursor to the others. Perhaps the design didn't prove popular in the Regency period and was revived by the Victorians. An interesting, earlier design of the expanding Despatch Case. Circa 1830.
