A curious mahogany, small Wash Bowl Box with creamware bowl.

The main box has a secondary, tight fitting removable box inside it. This in turn houses the bowl which sits within a cut out to the interior. Why it was considered necessary to have a box within a box is unknown unless it was to afford the bowl greater protection. Both boxes are plain but good quality, as is the bowl which has a pleasing shape. The lids to both boxes are fixed with simple brass swing hooks, 2 to the outside box and 1 to the interior box. There is no doubt that this Wash Bowl Box was made for travel but we have not seen anything quite like it before. Early 19th Century.
