A walnut folding Foot Rest.
The rest is probably for polishing shoes and made to pack away when not needed. It has the feel of being estate made and has a utilitarian feel to it with out the fuss of any decoration.
The angled and shaped top board has a lip to the bottom to stop your foot sliding off. The hinged legs are made in pairs and held in place by two angled struts. The struts are held in place by wooden pegs, attached to chains. They fit to the centre of the legs with a hole through both the strut and legs for the peg to fit.
This is a useful piece of kit and might of been used by an army officer or simply in the home. Late 19th Century.
