This pair of large silver Brighton Bun Travel Candlesticks are of top quality and have the maker's mark of Samuel Whitford (II). Whitford worked in London and is listed in the trade directories as a goldsmith at Denmark Court, Strand in 1815 and as a silversmith at 4 Porter Street, Soho in 1828. The hallmarking is for London 1839. Perhaps a sign of their quality is the separate sconce to the candle holder, making the removal of the candle stub easier.

One of the pair of candlesticks also has a snuffer which sits in a collar to the stem when not in use. The dishes are of a generous size being approximately an inch wider than the average and with a deep bowl. The dishes are both engraved with a heraldic wolf to one side with heavily entwined initials that appear to be 'L A W' which is repeated as a mirror image to give a complicated pattern. The Wilfing family are known to use a wolf as a heraldic device but we cannot confirm the family's link to the candlesticks. Silver Brighton Buns are scarce and this pair are exceptional and of a good date. Hallmarked 1839.
