Half Gallon Round Grog Measure
Half Gallon Round Grog Measure
83715
A tinned copper 1/2 Gallon sized Round Grog Measure.
This measure was made in the reign of Elizabeth II and approved by the Birmingham Weights and Measures Office in December 1955. The underside of the measure has a Trade Mark logo of what looks to be a worker or craftsman. The measure also has a vocabulary number stamped to the side as opposed to the base. This is unusual but is known on a 1 1/2 Gill measure with the same unknown maker's logo.
This is the second largest size Round Measure made. The condition is good with a dent to the rim near to the handle and the usual knocks and marks that are to be expected. Dated December 1955.
Round Measures were used for serving the Grog mixture of rum and water on board ship. The head of each Mess of sailors would be given the Grog to then share out. A Round Measure didn't need to be as accurate as the Lipped Measure, which was used for measuring the undiluted rum with water.
Please note that this measure is not shown in the video.
