A turned rosewood Berry Patent Travelling Inkwell.
The top of the inkwell unscrews to reveal the neck of the glass bottle surrounded by a metal collar. The underside of the lid is lined in rubber with a central lug the size of the bottle's aperture. The patent is likely to refer to the spring underneath the glass bottle, which pushes it up to make a watertight fit with the lug.
The top of the inkwell is stamped Berry's Patent with a crown to the wood. The company made a number of inkwells in different shapes and sizes, some in turned rosewood others of brass covered in leather. Mid 19th Century.
