This steel corkscrew is called a Peg and Worm with its name taken from the two parts.

The worm is the helix corkscrew and the peg is the bar which is fitted through a hole to the top of the worm to form a handle. They are commonly associated with travel because of their small size and the protection given to the helix by slotting the peg through its centre. This version is a little unusual as the peg doubles in use as a darning needle. The dual purpose is a further indication of it practicality for travel. Mid to late 19th Century.

Size for travel is given.
