1 Gallon Round Rum Measure
1 Gallon Round Rum Measure
83714
A tinned copper One Gallon Round Grog Measure.
The one gallon size was the largest Round Measure used by the Royal Navy. Round Measures were used for serving the Grog mixture of rum and water on board ship. The head of each Mess of sailors would be given the Grog to then share out. A Round Measure didn't need to be as accurate as the Lipped Measure, which was used for measuring the undiluted rum with water.
The size 'Gallon' is stamped to the front of the measure with further identification marks closer to the measure's lip. The EIIR below the crown is for Elizabeth II with the 6 below that the number for the Birmingham Weights and Measures Office. The date of April 1958 is shown by the number 4 above 53. The base of the measure is stamped 53169 which is the Vocabulary Number the Royal Navy used for the 1 Gallon size Round Measure.
The measure has the odd scratch and mark but overall is in good condition and is the hardest size, out of the eight, to find. Dated April 1953.
Please note that this measure is not shown in the video.
