RN Half Gill Round Grog Measure
RN Half Gill Round Grog Measure
83718
A Royal Navy tinned copper 1/2 Gill Round Grog Measure.
The marks are so worn to this Round Measure as to preclude accurate dating. There looks to be a 6 which would suggest that it was made in Birmingham with a D beside it.
The handle to this measure has had several knocks over time with most of the outside edge having dents. The edge of the measure has also been a little knocked out of shape. It smaller size has probably made it more vulnerable to damage.
The 1/2 Gill size was the smallest of the eight that the Royal Navy used. Circa 1900.
Round Measures were used for serving the Grog mixture of rum and water on board ship. The head of each Mess of sailors would be given the Grog to then share out. A Round Measure didn't need to be as accurate as the Lipped Measure, which was used for measuring the undiluted rum with water.
Please note that this measure is not shown in the video.
