A black japanned Tin Candle box with a lid that holds a candle.

The candle and any spares are stored in the main body of the candlestick which can also be used as a handle to carry it. If this was used by a soldier, it is likely to have been a private or officer that didn't come from a wealthy background. It is a utilitarian piece made out of tin sheet with a seamed joint. It is simple but very practical for travel and would have been affordable to a wide market.

Although not the most glamorous of travel lighting it is very interesting. It shows another side to the story and reminds us that everybody relied on light whether they were the highest general or the lowest private. Mid 19th Century.
