Glass Ship's Decanter

Glass Ship's Decanter

£225

A cut glass Rodney Ship's Decanter.

Ship's Decanters, with their wide bases to prevent them tipping over, were nicknamed after Admiral Rodney. They are believed to have been invented around 1770 specifically for use on board ship, the abnormally wide base giving a lower centre of gravity and so providing extra stability. Admiral Rodney is said to have used one on his flagship to celebrate victory after the Moonlight Battle off Cape St. Vincent in 1780.

This example has three rings to the neck and cut decoration to the body. The underside of the base and the associated mushroom stopper are cut with a star.

This Decanter is still very useable today and the rings to the neck aid the user's grip. Late 19th or early 20th Century.
