Beech Sailor's Fid

Beech Sailor's Fid

£65

A medium sized beech wood Sailor's Fid for rope work.

Fids came in a variety of sizes and were used for opening up rope knots and separating strands of rope in order to splice them together etc.

Most Fids are made of lignum vitae or marine ivory and it is unusual to find one in beech. As with most fids, there are few clues to aid in dating but it is likely to be late 19th Century.
