The most common timber for turning travelling candlesticks is olive wood but on occasion lignum, mahogany and even ebony was used.
This pair of sticks are turned in oak and perhaps the type of timber has influenced their 'chunky' feel. That is not to say that they look awkward as there is an elegance to the turning of the sconces. Late 19th Century.
