An Anglo Indian Cribbage box made of a sandal wood carcass veneered with buffalo horn and ivory.
The top edge of the box is decorated with engraved ivory filled with black lac and the central horn section of the two sliding lids is engraved with a flower and leaves motif. The sliding lids reveal two compartments to take playing cards and a small central compartment with lid to store the marking pegs. This box from Vizagapatam is well made and the horn to the sides lends itself well to giving a rich, smooth finish.
Originally made for the European market. Mid 19th Century.
