Large Sailor's Fid

Large Sailor's Fid

£145

A large teak Sailor's Fid.

This fid is the second largest shown in the group photo and can be considered a good size, although certainly not largest fid that was used. Fids are sailor's tools used for open up ropes to splice them together for for pushing into difficult to undo knots. A sailor would typically have a number of different size fids.

The owner of this fid has carved their initials 'LR' towards the widest point. The fid has various wear marks, knocks and stains to the wood through use. Mid to late 19th Century.
