A red and black leather on soft wood Games Board in the form of two books titled British Sports.
A number of retailers sold such Backgammon Book Boxes but, aside from the dice cups, you bought the playing pieces etc. separately. This example is a luxury model with not just the playing counters but also a lift out tray full of gaming pieces. The tray holds a boxwood Chess Set, boxwood and ebony Counters, a set of Dominoes a pair of leather dice cups, two pairs of Dice and a Doubling Dice, a Cribbage board made of mixed woods, a pair of leather Bezique Registers, a pair of wooden Whist Markers and three instruction Booklets for Bezique, Poker Patience and Whist. There is also a central lidded compartment to the tray that originally would have held two packets of playing cards.
This Games box provides a wide variety of games, some to be used with the box as a board, some to be played without the box. Standard Backgammon Book Boxes were sold in three sizes and three qualities but this set, with its addition of the tray and its contents, were aimed at a higher market. Circa 1900.
