Food Container
5818
This Food Container was probably made as a commission piece.
By repute it was owned by an Officer in the Somerset Infantry who was particularly fond of steak and kidney puddings and certainly the shape of the beaten copper bowl is traditional for such food. The jacket, which would keep the contents reasonably warm whilst out on manoeuvres, is made from Stroud Red cloth so it is probably that it was made from an old tunic. The domed lid is also made of beaten copper and the bowl has two brass loops to hold a shoulder strap.
An unusual piece of campaign equipment. Early 19th century.
