The exact purpose of this leather hide case is not known but it may have been for carrying tins of food for picnics or field sports etc. SOLD
Although utilitarian, this case is well considered with a shaped handle to fit comfortably in the hand. The top is fitted to the handle so that it can't be lost. To open the case, the top is lifted up to a point where the handle tips on its rivet fixings to tip back to rest parallel to the side of the case. The sides and base of the case are made out of one piece of leather with the sides stitched on to form a rectangular case. It is stamped 'Regn 17276' giving a design registration date for 1885. The handle and lid are also stamped with a 'N'.
An unusual case that can still be used. Circa 1885.
Height does not include the handle.
