A black japanned tin No. 3 Flask for 'The Diamond Grain Gunpowder by Curtis's & Harvey'.

The Flask has a diamond shaped paper label to either side giving the maker's details etc. and with an image of shot game. The Flask is very simply made out of sheet tin with a cap to the neck that pulls off. The shoulders of the flask are embossed with the maker's initials of CH.

The company was started by Sir William Curtis and W.G. Harvey in 1820 by buying a gunpowder works in Hounslow that had been in existence for around 100 years. The company expanded slowly through the 19th century by buying Tonbridge Powder Mills in 1859 and the Kames's Gunpowder Co. in 1886. In 1898 they became a Limited Company with several other gunpowder manufacturers joining them. They eventually became a part of ICI in 1932.

This tin is a survivor with many such items discarded after use. The lack of Limited to the labels dates it to prior to 1898. Mid to late 19th Century.
