History of England leather Backgammon Book Box with dice tumblers and counters.
This form of games set was very popular either side of 1900. The boxes were typically sold without the gaming pieces, which customers were expected to buy separately. This set has a pair of hour glass red leather tumblers, 4 dice and a set of boxwood and ebony counters.
The set is made of tooled leather on a pine box with feathered paper to the 'page edges'. The set is in good condition and should be used to play, although there is some wear to the leather at the corners etc. Some dice have been replaced. Circa 1900.
The size of the box closed is given. The depth should be doubled and the height halved for the playing size.
The illustration is from the A&N CSL catalogue of 1883.
