Sailcloth Trunk by J.W & T. Allen
Allen offered a large number of 'Black Waterproof Sailcloth' Trunks with some models available in either this material or hide.
This trunk is edged in tin, or 'iron bound' as Allen would describe it. It also has studwork, which is for decoration as much as extra strength. The handles to the sides are iron. The label gives the address of 18 and 22 West Strand which was typically used from 1849 to 1861. This trunk has the added benefit of being a good coffee table or side of chair height. Circa 1850.
