Robinson's Day Bed
Robinson's Day Bed
A mahogany Ilkley Couch with caned panels.
The shape of the removable legs to this adjustable and folding day bed show it was made by Robinson and Sons, which is confirmed by the company's paper label to the back of the frame. The label, as can be seen, was to be filled in by the cabinet giving his name, the date (which is partially printed as 187_) and other information. This one was either not filled in or the writing has faded with time.
The Day Bed has three panels that can be individually adjusted to various positions on a ratchet so that it can be used as a chair or even flat as a bed. The feet are removable with the frame also folding on hinge to reduce its length. The feet have good brass castors by J.W. Lewty of Birmingham.
Robinson's Ilkley Couch was so popular that it was copied by a number of other makers. It was used in Spas, in the home and advertised as being useful to army officers and travellers alike. The buttoned cushions are feather stuffed and its very comfortable. Circa 1880.
Height given for it flat, for use as a bed.
