Although it will stand, its more likely that this silver plate on brass travel candlestick was carried as a torch.

As can be seen the candlestick is formed of 2 tubes, one for the candle and a shorter one for the vestas or matches, united by a striking surface. The lid of the candle holder also acts as a snuffer and has a simple lock. Both lids are joined by a chain with the vesta case lid held in place by the tightness of its fit. There is a worn maker's name to the base which is probably Perry, a known maker. This is an uncommon form of travel candlestick that we have not seen before. Mid to late 19th century.
