Blue Leather Jewellery Case

A dark blue leather Jewellery Case.

The case is lined in velvet to cushion the contents and originally would have had a divider to the centre. The small size suggests that it was probably made for travel. The good, flush campaign handle to the top, which makes the box very compact and so easier to pack, also points to this.

The top has blind tooling to offer some subtle decoration. The key for the Bramah lock has been replaced to make the box useable.

The lock is marked 'J T Needs & Co. 100 New Bond Street' and 'Late J Bramah 124 Piccadilly'. Needs bought Bramah in 1871 and by 1901 were at 100 New Bond Street and had also realised the importance of having the Bramah name stamped to their locks alongside theirs. In 1904, the company reverted back to the Bramah & Co. name as it was so much stronger than that of Needs. By 1919, the locks were marked with their 32 New Bond Street address. So, from the lock, the box can be dated to between 1901 and 1904.
