Sailor's Fid

Sailor's Fid

Sold
Reference

82276

Sailor's Fid probably made of Macassar ebony although it is not as heavy as you might expect for the wood.

The fid is probably the most recognised sailor's tool there is. Fids were made in various different sizes and although lignum was probably the most common they were also made of other woods and whalebone. A fid was used for opening the strands of a rope for splicing. 19th Century.
