An ebonised wooden cased set of Wallis Motor Maps with an outer leather hide carrying case.
The instructions on how to use the maps, fixed to the cover board for the spare maps compartment, describes the set as Wallis Motor Maps. The purpose was to make the maps much easier to use for a navigator than having to unfold a large cumbersome map. A pair of winders to the side of the case allow you to roll the map to view in one direction or the other. A series of numbers across the maps allow you work out which one to use next when you reach the edge.
The back of the case has a compartment to take three separate maps on brass rollers. The four maps are identified as E, F, G and H. However, the instructions suggest that there should be six maps in total with a K and J. There is no space for their housing within the ebonised wooden or leather case suggesting they were held in a separate case. The maps cover the north of England and Scotland.
Little is known about Wallis Motor Maps although we have seen a larger example retailed by A. Webster of 43 Dover Street, London and owned by Lord Lonsdale. Lonsdale was known as a sporting gentleman with a love for cars. He was also a founding member of the Automobile Association who adopted his favourite colour yellow. Websters were high end retailers who enjoyed the patronage of The Queen. Vickery are also known to have sold them.
The Map Case is well considered and made with good gilt brass springs, clips and hinges etc. The leather hide case is also well made and lined with velvet to a cushioned fit. Circa 1920.
