Crab Railway Carriage Lamp
Crab Railway Carriage Lamp
It is remarkable that this brass Randell's Patent Crab Railway Carriage Lamp is still complete and in its leather box. As can be seen the red leather box has dividers to take the original and unused Palmer's candle and the gilt tin Bryant & May's match box as well as the Lamp.
The gilt brass lamp is simple in its operation with the candle sitting in a recess and then held by the sprung, serrated crab clip. The candle stand has sharp feet to grip its resting surface and is stamped both with Randell's Patent on the grip and a registration number on the base. The interior of the box lid gives instructions for use as well as noting that it is 'An Ideal Candleholder for all Travellers and Tourists' offering 'Simplicity, Utility, Economy and Safety combined.' The registration of 218696 dates the candlestick to 1893.
