Splashed Lustre Maritime Tankard
84172
A ceramic Tankard decorated with maritime transfers and splashed or mottled lustre decoration.
The black transfers show the Mariner's Compass and The Sailor's Farewell poem. Along with the lustre decoration, the inspiration for the tankard is taken from earlier Sunderland lustre ware which often had sea going themes.
The base of the tankard is marked with the Grays Pottery ship logo used between 1948 and 1961. As Grays only decorated pottery, with the white blanks bought in from other potteries, their logo covered that of the supplier. The white ware blank was supplied by Lancaster & Sandland, of Hanley in Staffordshire, who operated under that name from 1944 to 1968. The base is also impressed with 422 which is likely a design reference for Lancaster & Sandland.
The tankard is a good size and dates to between 1948 and 1961.
