A small Steel Barrel Travel Corkscrew.

This clever design was simple but effective. The barrel handle is formed out of two halves that are hollow to contain and protect the corkscrew when not in use. The worm of the corkscrew is fitted to one half of the barrel handle by a pin which allows to swing 90 degrees once it is fully pulled out of its handle. The other half of the handle can then be screwed back on to form a barrel handle, with the worm locked in place.

It was a popular design and common either side of 1900. Most were made of nickel or silver plate but this example stands out a little as it is made of steel. Late 19th Century.
