A mahogany and steel, knife and fork set of Travel Cutlery by Riviere.

This was a popular design of portable cutlery that was used throughout most of the 19th Century. A number of the earlier sets are marked Wraggs Patent but it is known that this design was also made in Germany and France. The handle of each implement also forms the sheaf for the other so, as can be seen, when packed both knife and fork are protected with only the two handles exposed.

Little is known of Riviere and his clarinet logo, although the name suggests that the maker was French. Its unlikely to be the same maker but there was a S.N. Riviere who was a Watch Maker, Goldsmith & Jeweller of 23, New Bond Street at the turn of 1800. He also had premises in Cheltenham and Bath. Late 19th Century.
