Leather Cased Set of Beakers

A set of leather cased plated Beakers by Drew & Sons.

The six graduated beakers are nickel plated and have a thin gilt wash to the interior. It is faded to the two smallest beakers suggesting that they were used far more than the other four. As they are the first you can take out, whilst they are housed in the case, it would seem that this set was mostly used by just two people. All the beakers are stamped to the underside with the reference number 20.

The leather hide case is made with a thick hide lining, which in turn has a thinner lining to cushion the beakers. The top of the two linings are stitched together with a wide blanket stitch that appears to be partly in decoration. Otherwise it would be a surprise for a maker of Drew's quality to use such a method. The lining was stamped with the maker's details before it was fitted as the curve of the bottom address line is partially covered. The maker's stamp to the leather is well worn but recognisable if you have seen other Drew leather luggage. The oval mark says Drew & Sons, Makers, Piccadilly Circus. The leather hinged lid is fitted by a strap to a plated button to the front and you can imagine that it has rubbed Drew's stamp through use. Early 20th Century.
