A nickel or silver plate and steel Travel Barrel Corkscrew by Drew.
This was a common form of portable corkscrew, made by a number of companies either side of 1900. It is unusual to find one with a maker's name stamped to it although we have had them engraved with an owner's name on occasion. The barrel is made of two parts that screw together. To one section there is a steel helix that will slide in and out. When fully extended it can be turned at a right angle to the half barrel, slotting into a cutout square section. When the second half of the barrel is screwed back in place, the corkscrew is held in place and the barrel forms the handle.
The details stamped to the barrel are 'Drew & Sons, Piccadilly Circus'. Drew were a well known shop in London for anyone wishing to buy travel equipment, which included campaign furniture and luggage. This Corkscrew is well made, as you would expect from a company of their stature, with a groove to the helix to make it more efficient. Circa 1900.
