1 Gill Grog or Rum Round Measure

1 Gill Grog or Rum Round Measure

Sold

A Victorian One Gill copper Grog Measure for issuing rum mixed with water in the Royal Navy.

The measure has the earlier three part construction with the braised, dovetailed seams apparent to the base and side by the handle. It is stamped to the front with a Broad Arrow mark and 1 Gill but both are very worn. To one side there is the smallest remains of what could be a London Weights and Measures stamp but there is too little to be sure. It would, however, fit in with the earlier construction date of the Measure.

The Grog Measure has had a few knocks and this is most apparent when looking down on the rim. It also appears to have been dropped with a dent to the bottom edge, which can be seen in the image of the Measure showing its base. It is an earlier Measure than most that become available. Circa 1875.
