A folding, cast iron Pen Rest.
The rest folds on a sprung steel bar to each side, to flat pack when not in use. Whenset up, it will take 4 pens, pencils or paint brushes to each side with a ninth to the top.
These stands are normally stamped with Design Registration number dating them to either 1900 or 1906. This example has not such mark and so perhaps was made slightly earlier. Circa 1900.
