Cavalry Box
Cavalry Box
81568
A mahogany Cavalry Box cut out of a solid block of wood.
The lid contains a burgundy leather mirror which is tooled to the back and has an applied photograph, which is presumably of a relative of the owner. Behind the mirror are 2 satinwood brushes and a razor strop. The swivel tray has cut outs for numerous tools including tweezers, a lace pull and the still present scissors, nail file and one of 2 razors which is marked by Joseph Rodgers of Sheffield. Below the tray is a compartment to take a missing round pot, 3 compartments, the middle of which has a shaving brush and a lidded compartment to the back. The box is rounded to the front and back, perhaps to make it easier to slip into a saddle bag, has a brass face to the front and a blank engraving plaque to the top. A good example of a Cavalry Box. Mid 19th Century.
