A good-sized black leather on softwood Despatch Box, stamped in gilt Legistalive Council, Jamaica with a crown, to the top.

The box is made by Wickwar & Co. of 6 Poland Street, Manufacturers to H.M. Stationery Office. Wickwar were well known, prolific makers of Despatch Boxes. The patent lock, similar to a Bramah is made by S. Mordan & Co. The owner of the box has adapted the lid interior by adding leather loops to take pens and pencils and brass tabs, marked with the monetary values of 1d, 2d, 3d and 1s. The main body of the box also looks to have had some small dividers to the left hand side removed.

The Legislative Council of Jamaica was partially elected and or appointed by the Governor and Colonial Office at different periods between 1866 and 1920.

The box has a chamfered top with blind tooling decoration and a large brass, swan neck handle which has all the screws lined up, which is a nice piece of detail. Wickwar are thought to have finished in business in 1899. Late 19th Century.
