This moulded Jug is decorated with a Rococo floral design and a transfer portrait of Major - General J.D.P. French. John French caught the public's eye after he made his name as a good tactician with his successful leadership of the cavalry in the 2nd Boer War. He went on to serve in the First World War and at Ypres but his reputation suffered from his inability to adapt and the debacle at Loos. He was an unsuccessful Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. French's full title is noted below his portrait and to the back of the jug. This jug was intended purely to grace a mantelpiece or cabinet when made rather than for a practical use. Aside from the Rococo decoration, it has a shaped foot and gilt touches to the rim. Circa 1900.
There is a long history of commemorative ceramics depicting various subjects from royalty and heroes to political causes. At the end of the 19th Century, when the country needed their moral boosting following events in South Africa, a number of military heroes were commemorated on various ceramics
