A walnut, folding Music Stand or Book Lectern for travel.
The clever design of this lectern allows it to fold down to form a wooden bar that can easily packed for travel. The would have been very useful to a musician engaged to play at parties etc. but it is also good for displaying a picture. The lip to the front edge of the bar will also hold the pages of a book whilst it's read.
The wider bottom edge of the stand forms the case when folded, containing the central upright with folded foot and the three bars from each side that form the frame. The parts are held together by brass rivets which allow them to move into position. The foot has three holes to adjust the angle of the lectern.
This lectern is a well-known design and was made in a number of different woods. It is well engineered and still works very well. Mid 19th Century.
