Salesman's Miniature Daybed
Salesman's Miniature Daybed
A mahogany Miniature Folding Day Bed or Ilkley Couch with removable legs.
Although unnamed (which fits in with it being a salesman's sample) it is likely that it was made by Robinson's of Ilkley. There were other makers of this type of Day Bed but most of the patents belonged to Robinson and the turnings to the legs are typical of the company. This is an exact model in its actions of the life size version. It differs in that it shows both caning to the seat and a metal mesh, which presumably represented the spring mesh Robinson's also offered. The legs are also removable with all on metal threads except one. The exception has a turned wooden thread. It is difficult to be sure if this was original, again highlighting the choices available, or is later restoration. Two of the legs are also made in a different timber which is either stained oak or teak to illustrate the variety on offer.
Salesman's samples and miniature furniture is difficult to find and this Day Bed can be considered rare. Circa 1875.
