Anglo-Indian Campaign Sofa
Anglo-Indian Campaign Sofa
83697
A teak Anglo-Indian Sofa made to dismantle for travel.
The base and legs of the Sofa are one piece with the sides and back removable. They are located to the base by three lugs to the back and a fixing bolt to each side. At some point, the fixing bolts have been moved with the new brass nut plates remaining in place. The sides of the Sofa are hinged to the back to further reduce its size when packed.
The back of the Sofa has an ornate carved cresting rail with motifs and decoration seen on other pieces of Anglo-Indian furniture. A much better cut of wood has been used for this which may be teak or a similar Asian hardwood. The Sofa could be further reduced in size, if need be, by unscrewing the plates fixing the cresting rail to the back. The sides and back are double caned. We have made the buttoned cushions for the Sofa and its probable that it was originally made to only have a seat cushion but those to the sides and back certainly add comfort.
The Sofa stands well on its four slender turned legs and the carved cresting rail adds a touch of luxury. Anglo-Indian campaign sofas do not appear often. Circa 1865.
