A mahogany, four poster Campaign Chair Bed by John Durham.
Durham was a foreman of and successor to Morgan & Co., as the brass name plate to this bed notes. This chair can be used simply as a type of wing chair or the seat can be folded out and extra legs attached to convert it to a bed. It was also made to be used as a four poster bed which would allow drapes to be hung to keep the occupant warm or nets to repulse mosquitoes etc. in hot climates. The bed stands out for retaining its original posts etc. as most such chair beds have parted company with theirs. The front posts have been reduced in size at some stage and the back posts are missing. This was presumably to fit it into a room with a lower ceiling height. The finials are also replaced. This is however a fine example of its type and given that Durham moved to 16 Rupert Street in 1826 can be dated to a 6 year period of 1820 to 1826.
