A faux bamboo beech and leather Folding Chair.
The chair has a padded leather seat with the leather back fixed to the rear of the seat to form a bucket shape. The front and back legs are pivoted to each other to form an X Frame when open but allowing them to fold. A number of different patents covering everything from special hinges to locking mechanisms were developed in the second half of the 19th century for folding chairs. We have found patents by both G. Davies (dated 1865) and A.M. Clark (dated 1876) illustrating very similar chairs.
This chair locks into place by a 2-part, riveted S scroll bracket to each side which firmly holds the chair in the open position. Both brackets are marked Patent Secure with an illegible name.
It is likely that this chair was aimed more at the domestic market than the military but having said that, we have seen similar chairs used by officers in military prints. The faux bamboo, honey colour of the beech wood and the replaced leather all combine well to make a very attractive and comfortable chair. Circa 1885.
