A two part mahogany Campaign Chest by J & W Lowndes of 18 Haymarket, London.

The two sections of the chest fix to each with two short bolts rather than lugs, and this ties in with other chests by the company that we have seen. The lack of brass corners or straps also ties in with their known methods. The drawer fronts have an incised cock bead to their edge and the linings are mahogany with quadrant moulding to the interior. The removable feet are original.

The chest has lived a life and to the front, left hand side of the top there is worn patch to the surface which is shown in the last image. It also has scars to the sides and a couple of patches where the two sections meet. The top section also has a small hole cut to the backboards.

Every drawer has a large Lowndes paper label fixed to the interior of the back board. The drawer locks give no evidence to help in dating the chest but a similar chest we have had by Lowndes had a Chubb lock which could be dated to around 1840. The chest is a little narrower than most. Circa 1840.
