3rd Dorset Rifle Volunteers Pewter Tankard

3rd Dorset Rifle Volunteers Pewter Tankard

Sold

A 3rd Dorset Rifle Volunteers pewter Tankard engraved to the front 3rd Ds, R.V.1872.

It is likely that this was a shooting prize given to a member of the regiment. It was quite common for Rifle Volunteer regiments to hold shooting competitions and the Dorset Volunteers were known to hold contests at the Maiden Castle butts, close to Dorchester. The 3rd Dorset Corp were formed in 1860 and based at Dorchester. The tankard has a glass bottom and is stamped 4 near to the handle. This probably refers to its size. There are no maker's marks. Dated 1872.
