A red leather Pocket Book with green leather to the interior and stamped in gilt lettering James Hill. Dundee.

A pocket book was essentially a wallet but it could also be used as a notebook and to carry memoranda and bills etc. This example more than triples in length when opened with a gusseted pocket to each of the 3 sections. The middle section has an addition pocket with a flap that holds that below in place, when folded. The Pocket Book also has a sleeve to take a pencil and a ribbon to hold notes. When completely folded, there is a flap that wraps around the whole to secure it. Although nothing is known of James Hill, Dundee was recognised for its many workshops producing fine kid gloves. So, perhaps it's not surprising that the city and Hill, also produced good leather Pocket Books.

Early to mid 19th Century.
