A brass case square compass with hanging ring.

The compass is very unusual for its shape, with most round. However, it is also unusual for its marking of S, J, V and Z which give the clue as to its place of origin. In the Slovak language the 4 main points of the compass are sever (north), juh (south), vychod (east) and zapad (west). This also tells us that the compass was not made for export.

The compass has a locking bar and is marked VTD. for the maker, to the dial. The back of the compass is stamped Tel 37 with the logo of a rampant lion. Early to mid 20th Century.
