A brass L&SWR Railway Guard's Horn.

It is stamped 'L&SWR' and has a horn mouthpiece. To the middle of the horn is a fixed loop to take a hanging lace or chain.

The London and South West Railway was born out of the London and Southampton Railway which was formed in 1838. The name changed a year later after it received its Act of Parliament.
It grew with the development of Southampton docks and its links to Aldershot and Salisbury. The importance of Portsmouth and nearby Southampton to the war effort in the Boer War and later the Great War were also a factor in its growth.

Although an everyday item when made it has developed a good colour to the brass and is in working order. Late 19th Century.
