The label to the bottom of the interior of this grained leather Kit Bag is for Hill and Millard and describes them as Military and Colonial Outfitters.
The mouth edge of the bag is also stamped 'Hill & Millard, 7 Duncannon St.' The firm are well known to those interested in campaign furniture and a table of theirs is described elsewhere in this catalogue. Like many makers of portable furniture, Hill & Millard also made leather trunks and this kit bag is a good example of their work. It is well made, with short straps to secure the square mouth shut and is lined in linen with divided pockets to the sides. It is marked with the initials 'T.H.C' to the side but also bear a tie on label noting the owner as Capt. J. Mumford. Late 19th century.
