Eprouvette Powder Testing Pistol By Burel SOLD

Eprouvette Powder Testing Pistol By Burel SOLD

£ POA

A brass and walnut Eprouvette Pistol for testing the strength of black powder.

The pistol has a round pan to the top of the small barrel to take the black powder. A shaped anvil, with knob handle to the top, is lined up against the mouth of the barrel. The anvil has an indicator wheel engraved with numbers from 1 to 12 to its base which is riveted to the pistol's body. A steel spring gives the anvil some resistance and there is a marker below. When fired the wheel turns according to the strength of the powder with the number of its strength stopping in line with the marker.

The Testing Pistol has a walnut handle and the brass is engraved with foliate decoration and '
Burel', the name of the maker. Not much is known about Burel although it is thought that he was active from 1690 to 1730.
